From the text of The Mystery of i and Me...
⚫"PIP: What is the complex number system?
JANUS: [as if it was the name of an old friend] Complex number system! You are too smart. I bet other kids your age aren't gossiping about complex numbers. My hair is so frigid today that I just want to chop it off--but we don't have any scissors in the house since your father got rid of the old ones for being too dull. Talk about irony.
PIP: Why do we need it?
JANUS: Your father goes into anaphylactic shock without irony. And without sarcasm. And self-reflection--you get the point. Your father's dull.
PIP: Who decided we need it?
JANUS: [finding a King Kulled receipt with coupons attached to it] My father! And these darned coupons!"
