This phantasmagoria plays with distortion of communication, distortion of size, and distortion of stage composition. The mother's mouth is shut when her voice can be heard, and Caroline cannot be heard when she speaks but her text can be read on the bottom of the stage. These alone, are mere effects. From the opening of Dinnertime...
⚫ Note: the soundscape of the kitchen should be a constant throughout the show, making various concoctions. With regards to these sounds, the SFX's are suggestions, and there should be more included in the experience which are subtle and designed to portray the full gamut of cooking.
Note: The text at the bottom of the stage reads like videogame text, so the words are typed out in real time, and only so many words can fit onto the stage, before the lines disappear and a new line starts.
Setting: A dinner table, not in use for dinner, which is on its way, being prepared in the kitchen by the house mother. The table is cut up into sections and placed around the stage. So, two people sitting next to each other may occupy opposite sides of the stage. A wall decor says "We gather," with a damage that suggests, "we gat her." A menacing portrait of Father on the wall in shadow-only the whites of his eyes visible.
A small door fram centerstage, cracking at the seams. HUGH enters the stage, breathing out the cold. He stands in front of the frame.
