As my first completed novel, The Good Ones, will not be first released to the world over the Internet. One day, hopefully, you will get to read the full thing in print.
"'To care for her,' he said, 'meant patience, grace, sacrifice, pain, and humility. Essentially, to care for her meant to face the most hideous reflection of ourselves and see just how far we unknowingly trekked down the devil's road, where the legwork needed to back out is ten times greater than the carelessness it took to wander. And I was willing to do that work. Please. I can't do it alone.'
'That is a lot of pressure for one to take on themselves.' Mrs. Applegate circled around the coffee table. 'Gemini was a very special girl. And I know that because--well--when I first arrived at the school, and I inherited the lesson plans--it was customary that every morning we should say a prayer.
Thank you God for the world so sweet.
Thank you God for the food we eat.
Thank you God for the birds that sing.
Thank you God, for everything.
And the year that Gemini was in my classroom, the kids and I said this prayer one day as we always did. All the kids were looking at the ground or goofing off and reciting loudly--but Gemini was staring at the clock, saying nothing--looking puzzled. And I don't know what she was thinking about, but after that, I never made the class recite that prayer again.'
Mrs. Applegate sat down and added, 'My eyes were opened, because I saw her face.''"
